TouchFileButler (touch -r) 2.01 for macOS

coded by innoLABvation GmbH

You have impressive photos and great videos – but all are mixed up, when watching them? Let TouchFileButler sort them for you!

With TouchFileButler (touch -r) you can easily give back your files the correct timestamp – including, but not limited to, photos and videos from different devices or edited data. In your storage folder, the app adjusts the date ‘Created’ or the date ‘Modified’ taken from the originals/reference files (with the same file names, file extension can differ) or even updates the file name – depending on the settings you have selected. TouchFileButler is not limited to media files. It works with all user files on your Mac. You find further explanations here: Why use TouchFileButler.

GUI

How to use TouchFileButler?

You have the option to

  • Touch: The date ‘Created’ and/or the date ‘Modified’ of the files in storage folder will be adjusted and the files in the storage path might be renamed – depending on your choice in settings. Choose the paths where the original files (e.g. SD-card or folder) are saved as well as the storage folder (e.g. edited photos). After you have made your selection in settings, you have the possibility to analyse the files in the storage path which TouchFileButler might change. Simply press the button Check. For each file and subfolder in the storage folder, you have a small comment in the log window. For further analysis, the log report is copied to the clipboard. To run TouchFileButler press Touch. The procession as well as comments for each file and subfolder in the storage folder are shown in the log window.
  • Rename: The names of the files in the storage folder will be extended with the date as prefix. You can select the date ‘Created’, the date ‘Modified’ or the date original (from EXIF of jpeg or png files, if not available then date ‘Created’ is not modified) from the original file in settings. To start the process, simply choose the path with the stored files and press Rename.
  • Copy & Rename: Additional to Rename, the originals are copied to a storage folder. The names are adjusted in the storage folder. To start the process, simply choose the paths to the originals and to the stored files and press Copy & Rename.

You may select the settings

  • Include Subfolder: Subfolder in storage folder will be proceeded if corresponding subfolder also exists in the original path.
  • For Touch:
    • Adjust Date Created with Date Created (from Original/Reference File) with | Date Modified | Date Original (EXIF): With that option, the date ‘Created’ of the files in the storage folder will be overwritten with the date ‘Created’, the date ‘Modified’ or the date original (from EXIF of jpeg or png files, if not available then date ‘Created’/‘Modified’ is not modified) from the original file, see the following example:

      Adjust date created

    • Rename Stored Files: Files in storage folder will be renamed with yyyyMMdd_HHmmss_NameOfFile:

      Adjust file name

Be aware that once the filename is adjusted, it will not be possible to run the command ‘Touch’ again as the file names in the storage folder do not coincide with the ones in the original folder anymore.
    • Adjust Date Modified with Date Modified (from Original File): The date ‘Modified’ from the original file will be applied to the file in the storage folder:

      Adjust date modified

    • Ignore File Extensions: For instance, you might use this option, when you have edited a jpeg file within a program leading to a png file. If extensions are ignored, TouchFileButler will use the dates from the jpeg file for the png file. Another example could be video.mov as original and video.mp4 as the converted file.
Note that the date from the first file found is taken.
    • Consider Case Sensitive within the Filename: It is useful to select case sensitive if you have a file – e.g. image.jpg showing mountains – in the storage folder and a file – e.g. Image.jpg showing seaside – in the folder with the original data, so that TouchFileButler does not assign image.jpg to Image.jpg.
  • For Rename | Copy & Rename:
    • Extend Filename with Date Created | Date Modified | Date Original (EXIF): The selected date will be added to the file name as prefix in the format yyyyMMdd_HHmmss_NameOfFile. If the EXIF data is not available then the file is not renamed.

Please note: TouchFileButler requires macOS 12 or later. All operations work locally on your Mac. The app adjusts dates and/or the name of the files in the storage folder, the original/reference data will not be changed. Only data in the storage path will be touched (adjustment of the file date and/or renamed). To use TouchFileButler, no internet connection is required. This app does not use 3rd party licences.
